Hand Stitching
Hand Stitching

Event Description

Kantha stitching has been practiced in what is now northeast India and Bangladesh for at least 1,500 years. Like all ancient needlecraft (when every bit of cloth represented hours and hours of effort growing, cleaning, prepping, spinning, and weaving), it is based on recycling and economy of materials, where less is more. Traditionally, Kantha used worn-out saris and dhotis stitching them together with threads unraveled from the very same garments. Kantha imagery is strongly influenced by the community, with Muslim stitchers incorporating mostly geometric and abstract motifs, and Hindu stitchers focusing on figures (plant, animal, and human). No matter the subject matter, Kantha stitching is built on a simple running stitch, making it easy for inexperienced stitchers to explore, while also offering accomplished stitchers endless opportunities for artistic expression.
This is a virtual class. Participants will meet on Zoom and will provide their own supplies. The supply list will be emailed.
