Manager, Ceramic Programs & Studios

DEPARTMENT: Programs
STATUS: Full-time 32-hour work-week, Non-Exempt REPORTS TO: Director, Arts Education 

POSITION SUMMARY: 

The Manager, Ceramic Programs & Studios (MCPS) plays an integral role in the overall success of Art Works Now as a member of the Programs Department. Working closely with the Executive Director, Director, Arts Education, and other Programs Department staff the MCPS supports activities that advance the mission, work and sustainability of the organization. The MCPS is responsible for planning, executing and evaluating Art Works Now robust ceramics programming, including the operations and maintenance of the organization’s clay studio(s) and equipment. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Assist in planning, executing, and evaluating sequential and single-session ceramic arts education programming and special ceramics programs and events including: seasonal classes, camps, workshops, Open Studios, Art Experiences, art parties, space rentals, tabling at community events, etc. 
  • Lead classroom instruction for select clay classes and camps, including substituting as needed 
  • Oversee operations, maintenance and organization of ceramics studio(s) including wheels, shelves, tools, slip buckets, glazes, equipment, glazing station, glaze mixing, etc. 
  • Organize and maintain firing schedules and complete bisque and glaze firings, including loading and unloading kilns – Manage inventory and maintenance of clay, tools, kilns and other ceramics equipment ensuring supplies, materials and equipment are restocked, repaired or replaced as needed 
  • Facilitate recycling of clay via pugmill including training and supervising staff/volunteers
  • Maintain strong, regular written and verbal communication with AWN staff, Ceramics Teaching Artists, and community partners, including general correspondence of ceramics program updates, needs, and reminders, as well as information for website and promotional materials 
  • In coordination with leadership team and fellow Program staff, draft, implement and update Ceramics Studio policies and procedures 
  • Collaborate with fellow Program staff to create and manage Programs Department schedule – Train and supervise Clay Studio Fellow(s), interns and/or volunteers 
  • Provide general administrative support for routine building operations including answering phones, receiving and visitors, and receiving and distributing mail and deliveries 
  • Assist with special projects as needed and perform other related duties as assigned 

REQUIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills 

Ability to develop creative approaches to solving problems 

Self-starter who proactively seeks out new opportunities 

Commitment to the overall mission and success of Art Works Now 

Strong desire to ensure access to high-quality arts education to all members of the Art Works Now community

Adept at information and project management while advancing concurrent projects 

Computer and technology proficiency 

Flexibility and a positive, team-oriented attitude 

Prolonged periods standing, sitting at a desk and working on a computer
Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds on a regular basis 

Associate’s degree or demonstrated related experience 

Must pass criminal background check 

SALARY RANGE: $30,000-$35,000 per year

Location

Onsite at 4800 Rhode Island Ave, Hyattsville, MD.
There is also some flexibility to teach remotely via Zoom.
